How to Choose an Overseas CNC Machining Supplier

A practical checklist for engineers and buyers choosing an overseas CNC machine shop: capabilities, communication, samples, quality checks, shipping and payment.

Sourcing machined parts overseas can lower cost and add capacity, but only if the supplier fits your parts. Use the same checklist for every candidate and compare answers side by side.

Capability fit

  • Which processes are done in-house (milling, turning, EDM, finishing)?
  • Which materials and part sizes suit their machines?
  • What tolerance do they routinely hold on your material?

Communication

Clear email replies, drawings understood without repeated questions, and design feedback before quoting are good signs. Send the same drawing to each candidate and compare the questions they ask.

Start small

Order a prototype or small first batch, check it against the drawing, then scale up. Agree how critical dimensions will be checked before production starts.

Shipping and payment

Agree the Incoterm (for example FOB, DAP or DDP), packaging, and who handles customs and duties. Confirm payment terms in writing.
