European drawings usually call out EN grades, American drawings AISI/SAE or Aluminum Association grades, and Asian suppliers often stock JIS grades. This table lists the nearest common equivalents so you can specify material confidently when sourcing internationally.
Equivalent grades are close but not always identical in composition or properties. If a property is critical, state the exact standard and grade on your drawing.
Aluminum alloys
- 6061 (AA) — EN AW-6061 (AlMg1SiCu) — JIS A6061
- 6082 — EN AW-6082 (AlSi1MgMn) — common European alternative to 6061
- 7075 (AA) — EN AW-7075 (AlZn5.5MgCu) — JIS A7075
- 2024 (AA) — EN AW-2024 (AlCu4Mg1) — JIS A2024
- 5052 (AA) — EN AW-5052 (AlMg2.5) — JIS A5052
Carbon and alloy steels
- AISI 1045 — EN C45 (1.0503) — JIS S45C
- AISI 1020 — EN C22 (1.0402) — JIS S20C
- AISI 4140 — EN 42CrMo4 (1.7225) — JIS SCM440
- AISI 4340 — EN 34CrNiMo6 (1.6582), nearest — JIS SNCM439, nearest
- AISI 12L14 (free-machining) — EN 11SMnPb30 (1.0718) — JIS SUM24L
Stainless steels
- AISI 303 — EN 1.4305 (X8CrNiS18-9) — JIS SUS303
- AISI 304 — EN 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10) — JIS SUS304
- AISI 316 — EN 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2) — JIS SUS316
Brass
- C36000 (free-cutting brass) — EN CW614N (CuZn39Pb3) — JIS C3604
Specifying material on international orders
Write the standard and the grade, for example “EN AW-6082-T6” or “AISI 4140, quenched and tempered”, and say whether an equivalent is acceptable. That avoids back-and-forth and wrong material.
Chi Xin Technology is a CNC machine shop in Nantun District, Taichung, Taiwan, founded in 2022. We run 5+ CNC machines — 4.5-axis CNC machining centers and CNC lathes — and mainly machine aluminum alloys and alloy steel, with a metal tolerance of 0.02 mm. We also offer wire EDM and surface finishing including anodizing, and we export to customers in Europe and North America.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send a drawing with EN material grades?
Yes. State the EN grade on your drawing and we will confirm the material with your quote.
Are equivalent grades identical?
Not always. They are the nearest common equivalents; compositions and properties can differ slightly. If it matters, specify the exact standard.
