6061 and 7075 are the two aluminum alloys engineers specify most often for CNC machined parts. 6061 is the versatile all-rounder; 7075 is much stronger but less forgiving. Choosing well saves cost without compromising the part.
Quick comparison
- Strength: 7075-T6 is roughly 1.7–1.8× stronger than 6061-T6 in tensile and yield strength.
- Machinability: both machine well; 7075 tends to give a slightly better surface finish and chip control.
- Corrosion resistance: 6061 is clearly better; 7075 benefits more from anodizing.
- Anodizing: 6061 gives the most even decorative colors; 7075 anodizes well but can look slightly darker or less uniform.
- Weldability: 6061 welds well; 7075 is generally not welded.
- Cost: 7075 bar and plate cost more than 6061.
When to choose 6061
Housings, brackets, manifolds, fixtures and most general parts. 6061 is the default choice unless strength or weight is the limiting factor, and it gives the most consistent anodized colors.
When to choose 7075
Highly loaded parts where strength-to-weight matters: bicycle components such as hub and drivetrain parts, aerospace-style brackets, and parts with thin sections under load.
Material equivalents
In Europe the same alloys are designated EN AW-6061 and EN AW-7075, and in Japan A6061 and A7075. 6082 (EN AW-6082) is the common European alternative to 6061. See our material grade equivalents guide for steels and other alloys.
Chi Xin Technology is a CNC machine shop in Nantun District, Taichung, Taiwan, founded in 2022. We run 5+ CNC machines — 4.5-axis CNC machining centers and CNC lathes — and mainly machine aluminum alloys and alloy steel, with a metal tolerance of 0.02 mm. We also offer wire EDM and surface finishing including anodizing, and we export to customers in Europe and North America.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7075 always better than 6061?
No. 7075 is stronger, but 6061 resists corrosion better, welds well, anodizes more evenly and costs less. Choose 7075 only when strength or weight requires it.
Do you machine both alloys?
Yes. We mainly machine aluminum alloys and alloy steel. Tell us the grade and temper on your drawing.
